Widmung
Music: Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
Words: Friedrich Rückert (1788-1866)
Widmung is the first song of the Myrthen cycle. Composed in 1840, the cycle could be considered autobiographical, and attempts to express the love between a man and woman, with all it’s struggles and joys. The cycle was composed for Schumann’s wife, Clara, as a wedding gift.
Schumann was a German composer and a music critic. He composed a great body of piano music, as well as lieder, four symphonies, one opera, and other orchestral, choral, and chamber works. Schumann is one of the great composers of the Romantic era.
