Throughout his career, Scarlatti composed chamber cantatas (cantate da camera). A chamber cantata is a work composed for performance in a home, and is written for one or more voices with instrumental accompaniment. Scarlatti composed some 600 cantatas. Sento Nel Core is one of them. The aria speaks of the fear of falling in love, and the reality of it’s unavoidable inevitability.
Alessandro Scarlatti is often credited as being the progenitor of Neapolitan Opera, however, research has shown that in reality he was a great synthesist of styles that had preceded him. He wrote around 85 operas! In his writing, the lyric beauty of the voice is paramount. Scarlatti had two sons that were also composers, Domenico and Pietro Filippo. Domenico composed over 600 harpsichord sonatas!
