Pie Jesu
Music: Gabriel Faurè (1845-1924)
Pie Jesu (a soprano solo) is a section of Faurè’s masterwork, the Requiem in D minor (composed between 1887 and 1890). Faurè’s requiem is a setting of the Roman Catholic Mass for the Dead. The Pie Jesu is a prayer for the everlasting rest of the dead.
Faurè was a French composer, organist, pianist, and teacher. Along with Duparc and Debussy, Faurè helped make the mèlodie a music form equal to the German lied. In his 100 mèlodies Faure worked with great precision, but also innovated and helped push French music into the Modern era. His music bridged late Romanticism and early modernism.
