Per la gloria d’adorarvi
Music: Giovanni Bononcini (1670-1747)
Words: Paolo Antonio Rolli (1687-1765)
Per la gloria d’adorarvi is from Griselda, Bononcini’s most successful opera which was composed for the London audience in 1722. Ernesto, the opera’s male lead delivers this aria as he sings, “I will love you even if I have no hope of your loving me in return!”
Bononcini was born in Modena, Italy to a musical family. His father and one of his brothers were also musicians and composers. He, like other composers moved around during his career. He worked in Rome, Vienna, Berlin, and London. Bononcini is said to have been an innovator in harmony and the use of dissonance, to the point that some of his contemporaries were “horrified.”
