Morgen!
Music: Richard Strauss (1864-1949)
Words: John Henry Mackay (1864-1933)
Morgen! is an achingly beautiful song and a classic of the repertoire. It is the last in a set of four songs (Opus 27) composed in 1894, as a wedding present to Strauss’ wife Pauline. Enormous control is necessary for the singer to have success with this song. A very slow tempo makes for long tones that must sing with ease and roundness throughout.
Richard Georg Strauss was an important German composer. He bridged that late Romantic and early modern music eras. He and Gustav Mahler were contemporaries building on the developments of Richard Wagner. Strauss was also a successful conductor.
