Minnelied
Music: Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)
Words: Ludwig Tieck (1773-1853)
Minnelied sings a tender song to the “nearby sweetheart.” The poem says the beauty of nature is lovely, but can never “be like unto her!” The song shows Mendelssohn’s debt to Schubert, with it’s piano figuration and compact succinct style. Minnelied consists of two verses set identically, an example of strophic song form.
Felix Mendelssohn was a German composer, pianist, organist, and conductor of the early Romantic period. He was born into a privileged family. His talents were recognized early, and by his teens he was already a mature composer. Opinions of his importance have varied, some consider his work conservative and uninteresting, while others elevate him among the best of the early Romantic composers.
