Lydia
Music: Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924)
Charles Marie René Leconte de Lisle (1818-1894)
Lydia contains many of the features typical of Faurè’s early song style: a smooth vocal line constructed of narrow intervals; strophic form; and a mixture of tonality and modality in the harmony (F major and the Lydian mode). Its simplicity is austere and deliberately archaic. Its melody of Hellenic purity is set in two identical stanzas with a transparent chordal accompaniment. Its original key is F major; Faurè’s musical pun (Lydian mode) is quite clear.
**Excerpt from Song, a guide to Art Song style and literature by Carol Kimball**
Faurè was a French composer, organist, pianist, and teacher. Along with Duparc and Debussy, Faurè helped make the mèlodie a music form equal to the German lied. In his 100 mèlodies Faure worked with great precision, but also innovated and helped push French music into the Modern era. His music bridged late Romanticism and early modernism.
