Lied Der Mignon Opus 62 #
"Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt"
Music: Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
Words: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832)
Mignon is a character found in Goethe’s novel Wilhelm Meister. Mignon isn’t the happiest of individuals. This sadness is vividly displayed in Goethe’s verses and reflected again in Schubert’s settings. Opus 62 contains four songs, “Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt” is the final of the four. Schubert set these particular words five times in total! This setting and D. 877/1 are perhaps the best known and most beloved.
Franz Peter Schubert (Austrian) was an extremely prolific composer given he only lived to be 31 years of age. He wrote over 600 lieder, ten symphonies (including the “Unfinished”), liturgical music, operas, incidental music, and a large body of chamber music and solo piano music. Schubert was one of the great early Romantic era composers, and the cornerstone of German lieder.
