Lasciatemi Morire!
Music: Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643)
Words: Ottavio Rinuccini (1562-1621)
Would you like to sing a dramatic song, look no further than Lasciatemi Morire!. “Let me die, and what do you wish should comfort me, in such hard fate, in such great martyrdom, let me die!” The aria comes from Monteverdi’s opera entitled Arianna (1608). In the opera, Arianna, the daughter of King Minos of Crete, sings this aria after helping Theseus (a hostage) escape death, only to be abandoned by him on the island of Naxos. Monteverdi was one of the first great opera composers. He was famous and innovative. On the third beat of this aria the melody and bass note are in sharp dissonance. This type of writing was unheard of but went over smashingly, just one example of Monteverdi’s genius.
Claudio Monteverdi was an Italian composer, gambist, singer, and Roman Catholic priest. Wow! His revolutionary and innovative style marked the transition from the Renaissance Period to the Baroque. He wrote one of the earliest great operas, L’Orfeo, in 1607. L’Orfeo is perhaps the oldest opera that is regularly performed around the world today.
