L’amour Est Un Oiseau Rebelle is from Georges Bizet’s 1875 opera entitled Carmen. It serves as the aria by which the opera’s star is introduced in Scene 5 of Act 1. Bizet adapted this aria from a work entitled El Arreglito, by the Spanish composer named Sebastiàn Yradier. Bizet mistakenly assumed El Arreglito was a folk song. When he was told the piece was by Yradier, he had to put a note within the Carmen score - to give proper credit for the original work.
Georges Bizet was a french composer of the Romantic Era. He was an accomplished pianist, but chose to focus his skills primarily on composition. Although he had little success during his lifetime, and had to do such things as transcribing and arranging to make a living, his opera entitled Carmen has become standard repertory in opera houses the world over.
