Heidenröslein
Music: Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
Words: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832)
Heidenröslein is a simple strophic song, telling a story about a boy and a rose. The “rough” boy sees the rose and tells it he will pick it. The rose protests and says “I will prick you...and you won’t forget me.” The boy must have the rose, however, and although she fights and cries, the rose must give in. A simple bass note/chord accompaniment supplies harmony and rhythm for this light and tuneful story song.
Franz Peter Schubert (Austrian) was an extremely prolific composer given he only lived to be 31 years of age. He wrote over 600 lieder, ten symphonies (including the “Unfinished”), liturgical music, operas, incidental music, and a large body of chamber music and solo piano music. Schubert was one of the great early Romantic era composers, and the cornerstone of German lieder.
