Harmonie du soir
Music: Claude Debussy (1862-1918)
Words: Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867)
Harmonie du soir (Evening Harmony), is a languid and sumptuous song, again evoking memory. Baudelaire’s poem speaks of nature evoking thoughts of love, life, and death. The “heart of love,” the “black void,” and the scent of incense envelop the reader in imagery exuding the beauty, and even holiness of the human experience. Baudelaire’s “quivering flower” and “languorous waltz” are clearly exhibited in Debussy’s imaginative setting.
Claude Debussy composed eighty seven songs, some are unfinished. He was a revolutionary “impressionistic” composer. His use of harmonic color and non-traditional scales proved very popular and influential.
