Des Antonius von Padua Fischpredigt (1893)
from the Song Cycle Des Knaben Wunderhorn
Music: Gustav Mahler (1860-1911)
Words: Traditional German folk poems edited by Achim von Arnim (1781-1831) and Clemens
Brentano (1778-1842)
Mahler began work on his great song collection for voice and orchestra in 1892. Des Knaben Wunderhorn contains 12 songs. These are grandiose works of substantial length, conceived for voices rich with strength and vigor. Thematic material from these songs often reappears in other works of Mahler’s. Des Antonius von Padua Fischpredigt forms the basis of the scherzo in the second symphony!
Gustav Mahler was an extremely creative composer and conductor. He married “the most beautiful woman in Vienna” too - Alma Schindler. Mahler worked mainly in Vienna, but also worked in New York City at the Metropolitan Opera and conducting the New York Philharmonic Society concerts. Most of Mahler’s songs are found in his large song cycles for voice and orchestra. Some of his early songs are written for voice and piano. Mahler’s songs are not short, and are conceived for rich voices capable of grandiose dynamic contrast.
