Das Veilchen
Music: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
Words: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832)
Das Veilchen is a compact, highly creative, through composed, mini-dramatic, word painted, finely crafted song. Throughout this song the compositional style and emotional fabric shift to reflect the poetry. We see a “sweet violet” with the dream of being picked by the “young shepherdess.” Yet, as the girl playfully approaches, singing the whole time, she doesn’t even notice the violet, and instead tramples the violet to death. Yet the violet rejoices that he was even to be touched in this unfortunate way by the object of his affection. Oh, to be brokenhearted and in love!
Mozart’s life is well documented - we’ve all see the movie Amadeus right?! His baptized name was Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart! A child prodigy with seemingly limitless talent and creativity, he began composing at 5 and by 17 was already a hired court musician in Salzburg. He soon settled and wrote many of his best works in Vienna. He composed over 600 works, many acknowledged as masterpieces. Songs were not primary in his compositional output, and were considered insignificant to Mozart. His early songs are mostly simple folk-like strophic forms with little complexity - parlor songs for fun and entertainment. We do have a few gems though, perhaps Das Veilchen being the most notable. Of course, we do have the great operas, and the great choral works including the unforgettable Requiem!
