Come raggio di sol
Music: Antonio Caldara (1670-1736)
Words: Unknown
Come raggio di sol (As a ray of sunshine) is an early song of perhaps a “tortured artist.” It speaks of putting on a happy face while “the heart is writhing in secret anguish.” Not exactly a happy song! The minor key and droning eighth note pulses add to the melancholy.
Antonio Caldara was born in Venice. He was a chorister at St. Mark’s in Venice. Throughout his career he worked in many places including Mantua (Italy), Barcelona (Spain), Rome, and Vienna.
