Che fiero costume is a fiery, almost malicious berating of sweet little innocent Cupid, the infant angel that makes us fall in love and therefore experience suffering and grief. Originally a cantata in Echi di riverenza, Op. 14 (Bologna; 1678), this melody re-appeared in Legrenzi’s opera entitled Eteocle e Polinice (1680). When taken at a nice clip the character’s rant-like frustration with love and it’s sufferings is easily sensed.
Giovanni Legrezi was an Italian composer of opera and other forms of vocal and instrumental music. He was also an organist, and played in many northern Italian churches. He was one of the most prominent composers in Venice in the late 17th century, and extremely influential in the development of late Baroque idioms across northern Italy. Like his predecessor Monteverdi, he became director of music at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice late in life.
