Beau Soir

Paul Bourget provided the texts for several of Debussy’s early songs. Beau Soir has been variously dated between 1878 and 1880, but Cobb (Margaret Cobb, The Poetic Debussy) suggests that 1883 is a more likely date. It is perhaps the best known example of Debussy’s early impressionistic style, a quiet scene washed with the setting sun and the warm evening breeze. Phrasing in voice and piano is extremely lyric in the style of Massenet and earlier French song, but this mèlodie (french word similar to the German word - lieder) already exhibits Debussy’s gift for blending text and musical material.

Claude Debussy composed eighty seven songs, some are unfinished. He was a revolutionary “impressionistic” composer. His use of harmonic color and non-traditional scales proved very popular and influential.
