Ave Maria
Music: J.S. Bach (1685-1750), Charles Guonod (1818-1893)
Words: Traditional Christian prayer (Latin translation)
The Ave Maria is a traditional Christian prayer asking for the intercession of the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. This is a popular and much recorded setting of the Latin translation of the Ave Maria prayer. It was originally published in 1853 as Mèditation sur le Premier Prèlude de Piano de J.S. Bach. The piece consists of a melody that Guonod wrote using the first prelude of Bach as the piano accompaniment.
