A song of rejoicing the arrival of love, Pur dicesti, o bocca bella is an early Italian aria. It was probably heard in one of the Opera Serie (serious operas), but we do not know which. Originally this song would have been heard with continuo accompaniment, and perhaps strings. The arrangement heard most often today comes from Allessandro Parisotti’s Arie Antiche collection (1885).
Antonio Lotti was born in Venice. He studied under Lodovico Fuga and Giovanni Legrenzi, both of whom worked at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice. Lotti himself worked at St. Marks for his entire life. He started as an alto singer, then second organist, to first organist, to Maestro di cappella (music director). He wrote a variety of types of music, and is said to have helped bridge the established Baroque with the emerging Classical styles.
