Plaisir d’amour
Music: Jean Paul Ègide Martini (1741-1816)
Words: Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian (1755-1794)
Plaisir d’amour (1784) is a French love song, the text of which is taken from Florian’s novel entitled Cèlestine. The text tells the story of a man abandoned by his love, Sylvie. His heart is broken because she lead him to believe her love was true, but alas, she tired of him, and got a new bloke. The moral of the story: “The pleasure of love only lasts one moment; the regret of love lasts a lifetime.” Musically, this French song is more akin to Mozart than the later compositions of the hugely influential Claude Debussy.
Martini was born Johann Paul Aegidius Schwarzendorf in Freystadt, Bavaria. At a young age he moved to France and adopted the name Martini. In France he was a successful court musician and composer. His opera L’amoureux de quinze ans (1771) was a great success. In addition to being a composer, he was also a professor of composition at the Paris Conservatory starting in 1800.
