Le Violette is a fresh, light, and charming aria. It comes from Scarlatti’s opera entitled Pirro e Demetrio (1694). In this aria we find a young man named Mario asking the violets if his hopes of finding love with a certain someone are too ambitious. There is a lovely playfulness to this aria, especially as the melodic line is echoed in the accompaniment throughout.
Alessandro Scarlatti is often credited as being the progenitor of Neapolitan Opera, however, research has shown that in reality he was a great synthesist of styles that had preceded him. He wrote around 85 operas! In his writing, the lyric beauty of the voice is paramount. Scarlatti had two sons that were also composers, Domenico and Pietro Filippo. Domenico composed over 600 harpsichord sonatas!
