Danza, danza, fanciulla gentile
Music: Francesco Durante (1684-1755)
Words: unsure, possibly Lorenzo Pagans
Danza, danza, fanciulla gentile is spoken from the perspective of a musician performing a song and urging a “gentle young girl” to dance “without stopping.” Fluid vocal phrases mimic the motion of dance. There are many ascending and descending patterns that could denote the “sound of the waves of the sea.” This piece is often performed too heavy handedly and sounds it’s best
with an assured but graceful approach.
Francesco Durante was an esteemed composer of the eighteenth century Neapolitan school. Once a pupil of Alessandro Scarlatti, he became a teacher as well, having many students, including Giovanni Pergolesi.
